Every August, the city of Davao is a sight to behold because of the annual Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival. It is a weeklong celebration of the Filipino tribal culture and way of life, as well as a thanksgiving for the abundance of nature’s gifts. The fact that the festival still continues is also a cause for celebration unto itself since it is proof that despite the modernization of the Filipino culture, the Filipinos still pay homage to the roots of their ancestry. Spectators are treated to a parade of flowers and fruits, a colorful spectacle that is visually appealing and it is recommended that one brings a camera to take photos of the event. You also shouldn’t miss out on the Indak Indak sa Kadalanan, which is when the performers wear colorful costumes while dancing on the street. This tribal dancing is accompanied by upbeat, rhythmic music that makes you want to dance along with the performers. The festival also includes a trade fair, the Ms. Kadayawan beauty contest, and even more singing and dancing.
If you’re planning to join the celebration, the best place to stay is at the Red Knight Gardens. It is located ten minutes from the airport, so weary travelers who arrive by plane will be able to rest after their trip.
